Habitat destruction, trade as pets and for labs
Often, there is an interesting connection among females in care for babies, when the females assist one another in caring for the offspring. (it often looks like violent kidnapping of a baby from its mother by another female, but when nursing time comes, the baby returns to its biological mother) Squirrel monkeys mainly eat fruits and insects, as well as some seeds and leaves. Their daily routine includes searching for and eating fruits at the beginning of the day, and afterward, most of the day is dedicated to searching for insects and spiders, which they catch at all levels of the forest. Here at the Biblical Zoo, the squirrel monkeys receive a balanced diet which includes fruits, chicken, soybean pods, along with a side of insects. In the wild, they face various threats, including prey by eagles and snakes, as well as collection by humans for the local pet market where they are a popular monkey (even though this is illegal.)
